Last week Steve gave us the best christmas movies that aren’t christmas movies but actually are christmas movies because they happen at christmas. You may or may not agree with him, but he makes a good point and as someone who argues with him on a regular basis, you have to let him have this one (even though “A long kiss goodnight” could happen at anytime and would still be a kick ass movie) So in the spirit of the season here are my favorite christmas movies and TV shows that are actually about christams. Happy Holidays.
5. Christmas Vacation – This was my vault pick from 3 weeks ago and I finally got it on DVD this year. It is Chevy Chase at his best. This time the Griswolds don’t have to travel but that doesn’t stop the hijinks from finding them. Randy Quaid is in form as cousin Eddie and it is just funny and stupid and gets you in the X-mas spirit. On a side note, I was at my local DVD retailer and found the deal of the day. One DVD, 2 discs, and all 4 vacation films. Widescreen and 5.1 surround. and it was only 10 dollars. Merry Christmas to me.
4. Elf – My vault pick from this week (sense a pattern yet?) probably one of my top 3 Will Ferrell films and of the best modern christmas classics. Will Ferrell is buddy the elf, who is actually a human raised by elves and once he realizes this, sets out on a journey to find his birth father. Great cast, including the charming Zooey Deschanel, the legendary Bob Newhart and oddly perfect cast Ed Asner as Santa. It is sweet and charming and Ferrell is perfect as a man-elf.
3. Its a Wonderful Life – I never saw this before last year. I know its considered a christmas classic and I felt that it was about time that I saw it. And true to its title, it is a wonderful movie. Jimmy Stewart is perfect as George Bailey, a man who is shown how different the world would be if he doesn’t commit suicide. (pretty cherry stuff huh?) Even though this classic was considered a flop when it was released in 1946, it has gone on to become a staple of TV viewing and will probably be on TV until the end of time. Or James Cameron helms a re-make, Avatar style.
2. A Christmas Story – Again with the vault picks you say? thats right. But thats gong to happen when you have some overlap in your topics. This has been the longest running movie at christmas time at my house. The story of Ralphie Parker and his quest for the red rider BB gun. So much fun, so much fake nostalgia and to top it off, a pink bunny suit and the bumpus hounds. Apparently the house that this movie was filmed in still exists and you can go stay there. It comes complete with a leg lamp in the living room and everything. I think I now know what I want for next christmas.
1. How the Grinch Stole Christmas – I am talking about the 1966 original, not the movie remake starring one Mr. James Carrey. This is the only TV show to make the list and it shoots to the top holding down the #1 spot. Its a story that we all know and love so I am not going to bore you with the details. I will just say that it is responsible for one of my favorite parodies from The Simpsons, (the dental plan eps where they go on strike) and has become synonymous with being a downer at x-mas time. Now quite being a Grinch and go enjoy the Holidays.
