In what I thought was a very bold move, yet it garnered little to no reaction on air, I made my vault pick this week a TV show. Thats right, I am not just recommending an old movie for you to watch, I am suggesting an entire season of a TV show. And what better show to be the first TV production out of the vault then “Friday Night Lights.”
You will rightfully confuse this with the movie of the same name. They are both based on the same book and the movie was directed by Peter Berg and he developed that movie into this TV series. But that is where the similarities end. Well that and the fact that Connie Britton plays the coaches wife in both shows and Brad Leland makes an appearance in both, most notably as uber-booster Buddy Garrity. But what the TV show does that the movie didn’t have the time to do is develop some of the most authentic characters I have ever seen on TV. So much so that I have contemplated moving to Texas just so I could partake in these peoples lives. I know they aren’t real but I am positive that I could find there real world replacements if I tried.
At its base its a show about high school football, and all the problems that are faced when the town of said high school expects nothing less then a state championship and they aren’t afraid to let the 16 year old kids know that. It has everything I ever wanted in a TV show. Strong characters that have more then one dimension, colourful supporting players that help extend the already strong story lines and football. Football movies are great at setting up that last drive or amazing catch that wins the game. Now imagine a whole season of amazing catches and you get Friday Night Lights. Quite possibly the best thing that you have never seen. And it really is a shame since this show is too good to not be adored by the masses. Go get it now. Sit back and take it in. Be prepared to laugh, cheer, and cry and wish you could move to Texas with me. Together we can find the real Tim Riggins and buy him a beer.
