Ah, the question that has plagued mankind since the invention of the single wheeled barrow. Is Jay Mohr funny? Now, to most of you, Jay Mohr is nothing more then a has been who did about nothing on his two years on SNL. To others he is the current star of CBS’s “Gary Unmarried” and yet to others still, he is “what? who the fuck is Jay Mohr?” I hope to solve this riddle in the next 500 words or so. (hopefully less since its late and my fingers are tired)
1. SNL. Jay Mohr was a featured player on this venerable institution of comedy. He appeared from 1993 to 1995. Apparently he was intimidated by Rob Schneider (really? you want to admit that?) had conflicts with Al Franken (over what, I would love to know) and appeared in such memorable skits as…… exactly. Verdict: Not Funny.
2. Action. In 1999 Mohr made 13 episodes of what I will call probably the smartest show on TV. At the time. He played Peter Dragon, an LA film executive trying to make a hit. It was clever, funny, edgy and it pushed boundaries. So like many other shows of this nature, it was cancelled. But it does live on in DVD, so go find it. Verdict: Funny
3. Jerry Maguire. In the role of Bob Sugar, Mohr managed to hold his own with Tom Cruise and gave life to the sleazy agent. All it really did was make Cruise’s character look better but then again, it was a great role in a good movie. He wasn’t in it enough for me, but when he was I smiled. Verdict: Funny.
4. The Ghost Whisperer. I never knew that he was on this show for over 30 episodes. I am assuming that he was probably mildly funny, but not as funny as he wanted to be, since this show doesn’t seem funny at all. But I could be wrong. Again, I have never seen it. Verdict: Not Funny?
5. The Last Comic Standing. Yeah, Jay Mohr is responsible of this. He created it and hosted the first three seasons. I honestly liked it. Its a show about comics fighting to be comics. Almost everything was funny. Even when they weren’t on stage or doing some ill conceived challenge, they were funny. I wish this was still on and not many of the other reality competition shows that still manage to get made. A perfect world, it is not. Verdict: Funny.
6. The Simpsons. Okay, like most celebrities, Mohr was not playing himself or using his own voice. Apparently he was on one episode, doing his now legendary Christopher Walken impersonation. As some one who has attempted and failed miserably at this impersonation himself, I know how awesome it must feel to have a good one that you can pull out and use at any given moment. And it is good enough to get you on the simpsons. Now, I wonder why the Simpsons just couldn’t get Walken for themselves, but thats a whole other thing. Verdict: Funny.
7. Gary Unmarried. Now Jay Mohr has shown up again. This time in a sitcom about a divorced dad. How hilarious is divorce? I mean c’mon, its just ripe for satire. Broken families, ex’s not getting along, upset children, so much good material. Actually there is. I like this show. Its not in my top 10 or anything, but I wouldn’t kick it off of the TV for trying, if you know what I mean. Hehe. Actually I don’t know what I mean. It is just a funny show, nothing more, nothing less. And most of the comedy stems from Mohr. I am glad he had found his vehicle. Verdict: Funny.
So there you have it. For some reason that I do not know, I have successfully determined that Jay Mohr is funny. Now we can all get on with our day and start to solve the more pressing problems in our society. Like the cure for cancer, or why do girls say they will call you when they don’t? I mean c’mon, its just a phone call. Bitches.

I’d like to add three more instances of Jay Mohr being funny:
1. Go – I love this movie, and though he’s not in it much, he has some of the best lines and is overall very likable in it.
2. Paulie – I don’t know why I ever saw this kids movie, but I did and I ended up liking it a lot. Mohr voices the titular parrot, and does a perfect job covering a vast array of emotions, all the while bringing humor to it. The best movie about a talking parrot I’ve seen.
3. The Jim Rome Show – don’t know if you get this up in Canuckistan, but Mohr frequently fills in for Rome when he’s on vacation, and he kills me every time. If he had his own radio show or podcast, I would definitely be a listener.
less is definitely not Mohr – the man is a legend
if i was a sports star i would definitely have Bob Sugar as my agent
