There is reason for hope in John Connor and the rest of humanity’s battle against the machines. Much in the same way prophesies play out in the movies, they tend to be prophesies of their own creation. Upon closer examination it would appear that the quagmire the machines found themselves mired in was one of their own making. By sending back a Terminator to kill Sarah Connor, John Connor had no choice but to send someone back in time to protect her. Whether John was already aware he was sending his father back in time in order to be conceived is not my concern, what is is that had the machines not sent Arnie back at all, John Connor might never been born in the first place, let alone trained for his destiny in advance. I know I’m getting into some weird Isaac Asimov science fiction reasoning, but I don’t think I’m off base here.
Oddly enough, this kind of convoluted scenario plays out in a number of other films where they wouldn’t find themselves in their particular predicament had they not meddled with it in the first place.
In 12 Monkeys, had James Cole not travelled back in time in the first place, would the groundwork still have been laid for Dr. Peters to make off with the virus in the first place? Makes you wonder about the “insurance” lady on the plane…
In Kung Fu Panda, if Master Oogway hadn’t warned Master Shifu about Tai Lung’s imminent escape, he’d likely still be languishing in prison and Po would still be slinging noodles with his Dad.
And maybe if Sandra Bullock had a better agent the wouldn’t have made Premonitionat all and saved us all alot of time and disappointment.
You get the idea.
So really, it seems that the more they try to meddle, the worse the machines make things for themselves. If they’d just stuck with the whole human apocalypse thing, maybe they’d be ruling a lifeform free world by now… then… whatever.
