    From the Vault – Scratch

ScratchScratch is a once in a lifetime movie. And by that I mean, it can only be made once , but you can watch it endlessly and every time take more and more form it. Granted I am a very shitty amateur scratch DJ, so this movie was made for me. It chronicles the start and evolution of the hip hop scratch DJ, and if you are lucky enough to have ever seen the likes of Mix Master Mike, Q-bert, Rob Swift or any of the other talented DJs live, you will know how fucking amazing it is.

This movie inspires and depress me at the same time. It shows how great DJ’ing can be but also how time consuming it is to become a master of this art. I won’t bore you with the details of how many times I have tried and failed to recreate the scratches seen in the film. Going as far as hunting down two copies of  Audio Two’s “Top Billin” and trying in vain to make you “step up if you wanna get hurt” uhhh i meant to say, “if you step up you’ll get hurt” (watch the movie and you will know what I am trying to say)

The real reason I am bringing this movie out of the vault is that on september 19th, we lost of the true greats in this art form. Roc Raida of the legendary x-ecutioners crew passed away. His part in this film is awesome. When they show him doing his ninja of rap routine from DMC worlds, it sends chills up your spine. He was truly a pioneer in a still growing art form and his passing will not be forgotten. Not as long as I have two turntables and two copies of LL Cool J’s “Get Down”. Peace.
