From the Vault – Elf

elfChristmas movies get made a lot. Almost every year a new flick is added to the cannon. And since they are all relatively tame fare, no one complains when they are shown at nauseam for the next decade or so, claiming to be a holiday favourite. Regardless if they are or not. But in the last decade there is one movie that I have added to my yearly christmas watch list and that is Jon Favreau’s 2003 christmas comedy, Elf.

It is a simple story of a man raised by elves at the north pole. Will Ferrell is perfectly cast as the man child in the lead role of Buddy the elf. As he enters adulthood, he finally figures out that he doesn’t belong and goes on the search for his birth father, played with the perfect bah humbug attitude by James Caan. Along the way he spreads christmas cheer, teaches a few life lessons and falls in love with Zooey Deschanel (but then again who wouldn’t, those eyes, man, they are killer, they make me want to rip off her…. oh wait this is an X-mas post)

This movie is funny, sweet, warm and just a good time in front of the TV with a cup of ‘nog and tray full of cookies. It had everything you want from a Ferrell film and gets you in the mood to celebrate the season. I for one can’t wait to pop it ye ole DVD player and have myself a good laugh. Merry Christmas everyone!!
