Throughout the month of December we’re gonna try to aim our Vault picks in a particular direction: either towards Christmas movies you might want to give a second look, or to a classic movie or collection that might make a good gift. This week, my pick is the latter, a sweet gift idea to boost your blu-ray collection.
Now that Stallone has finally performed his swan song performance as Rocky Balboa, yet another iconic character he has provided closure for over the last few years, you can finally invest in a Rocky collection without fear of having to keep tacking on new installments (Indiana Jones, I’m looking in your direction). With all 6 movies of the series plus a whole other disc filled with special features, this is an ideal gift for the movie buff with even a passing interest in hollering “Yo Adrian!”
To be honest, I had given up on the Rocky franchise after watching part 5 – I didn’t think they had anything to offer the world other than providing more underdog stories, each one less uplifting than the last. When I actually got this new collection in my clutches, I finally had the chance to watch part 6, and I can say that Stallone put everything he had to say about the character into this film and wrapped it up the way he should have. Man, am I glad they didn’t kill him off at the end of part 5 like they had planned.
